Educational Toys Games
For Preschoolers
Counting And Using Numbers

Educational toys games for preschoolers are easy to make and do with items from around the house.

Help your child develop their numeracy skills

All children develop their numeracy skills at different speeds, so it is essential that each child is given the opportunity to develop at his or hers own speed through the following stages.

There are four main skills that your child will need to develop before he begins to count.

Recognition of The Sound of The Numbers

Singing number songs is a great start to introducing your child to numbers.

Your child will start to recognise the sound of numbers from an early age if they hear number songs and rhymes daily.

There are many number songs, and also many CDs and DVDs, that can help you, if like me you are not a natural born singer. CLICK HERE For More Educational Music CDs and DVDs

But it is the enthusiasm you put into the songs, which will have your child asking for more!

Also books and stories that include numbers can help too. When reading your child stories makes a point of counting the characters and the key items in the picture.

Educational toys games for preschoolers don’t have to be hi-tech, expensive items, doing simple activities as below can do the trick!

The Association of The Number

Before your child learns to count they need to understand that one equals one item, two equals two items and so on.

This is a difficult skill for your preschooler to learn, so have patients, and encouraging your child, will go along way.

You can help your child by doing a small daily activity.

Laying the table is a good idea, as it gets done every day, which is good practice for your child.

You could do this in a play situation, do a teddy bear picnic, and let your child share out the sweets or cakes to each of their teddy bears.

Use very small numbers to start with and as your child gets his understanding of association number and quantity, start adding another one at a time.

Quantity “How Many Are There?”

As you count objects together touch each one.

This helps children to understand that they are counting one thing at a time. A good way of doing this is at story time; ‘The three bears’ is a good one to start, as it repeats up to three, many times.

Then gradually as your child successfully does it by himself, give a more challenging book like ‘The very hungry caterpillar’.

It is important to build your child’s confidence so that he is not uncomfortable with numbers.

The Understanding of Numbers

The order of numbers

The cookie jar pot is a great way to play a game which will help your child with the order of numbers, or you could make your own number cards, with the number symbols on one side and the number of spots on the reverse.

Lay out the cookies with the spots on up to five at first, and ask your child to put them in the correct order. When this is achieved you could make the game a little harder by taking one of the numbers out and see if your child can tell you what number is missing.

The next step is for your child to recognise numbers as symbols, which can be tough for your child to understand at first.

Number recognition games, such as number cookie jar is a good way for your child to learn to recognise numbers.

As with the first game from the cookie jar change the game by putting in only the number symbols for your child to put in order, remember to give praise and lot of encouragement.

Recognising The Symbols

A fun way to help recognition of numbers is The Number–Shape System (this is taken from the book ‘Use your memory’ by Tony Buzan).

All you have to do is think of images for each of the numbers from 1 to 10.

Each image reminding you of the number because both the image and the number have the same shape. For example;

Number 1, A Paintbrush, pencil, candle

Number 2, A Swan, duck, goose

Number 3, A Heart, behind, molehills

Number 4, A Chair

Number 5, A Hook, pregnant woman

Number 6, A Elephant’s trunk, golf club, cherry

This will help your child enormously as their imagination can run wild.

Tony Buzan also wrote the book Brain Child, How Smart Parents Make Smart Kids, which is a brilliant read and shows you simple games to play which will help your child’s memory and if taught young can help them through schooling and beyond.

Educational toys games for preschoolers will make them a step ahead of the rest, with confidence in themselves and dealing with numbers.
