Babies understand so much and using sign language helps them learn to communicate, even before they can talk! This in turn, helps to take the frustration out of communication, that many babies have in their early stages of development.
From as early as 6 to 9 months old, babies can begin to use sign and can tell you what they want.
Patience and consistency is the key. Use the signs whenever you can and your baby will be able to quickly, make association between the object and the sign.
Don’t be put off by the fact that you have no prior knowledge of baby sign techniques as there are some great educational sign language books and dvds that can help you and your baby to learn to sign.
There is an ongoing debate on the subject of teaching baby signing.
Many experts are concerned that signing takes priority over parents talking to their child. On the other hand parents that have used baby sign language rave about having children who are calmer and speak earlier than their non signing peers.
