Free Toddler Games
To Enjoy With Your Child

Toddler Box
There are masses of free toddler games hiding in your home, just waiting to be made into lots of educational free games for you and your toddler to enjoy.

Creating your own games and activities for your toddler might sound like hard work, but it is great fun and enjoyable, once you start.

With imagination you can come up with lots of your own free games for your toddler, but here are some ideas to get you started.

Free Toddler Games
Box Games

Card Board House
Collect boxes of any size, as children love using them in lots of different ways.

Just think of any toddler’s birthday, or Christmas day, what do they end up playing with? The boxes and wrapping paper!

With help they could make a house, a fire engine or just build a tower.

Making games like this will help your toddler’s hand-eye co-ordination, imagination, creativity, language skills, as well as their fine and gross motor skills.

Matching Game

Tie string to the top of two chairs to create your very own, child size, washing line.

There are two ways of playing this game

  1. By using items of clothing that match, such as socks, gloves, children’s shoes or slippers.

  2. For a bit more fun, paint two copies of the same picture, to make a matching pair. Do this for 5 to 6 pictures, and let the pictures dry before cutting them out and playing the matching game.

Put all these items into a big box (you could paint this box and cut out a large circle to make your very own washing machine!).

Talk to your child about socks and gloves...

When do you wear them? How many do you have?

Tell them that they always come in pairs, talk about the patterns and color and that the socks in each pair, are the same.

Now get all the items out of the Washing Machine and lay them on the floor.

Talk about the difference in sizes, ask your toddler if they can find two of their little socks? Do they match? Have they made a pair?

If they have, tell them, “well done.” Now they can peg them on the line.

If not help and encourage them until they get it right.

This fun and simple game will help your child’s Maths Skills, like paring, sorting and counting.

By using the pegs you will also help develop their Fine Motor Skills and Hand-Eye Coordination, which will help in develop areas such as pre-writing.

A game like this will also help their imagination, language skills, color recognition, and give them a better understanding of size, counting and the recognition of familiar items.

The list of positive learning benefits could go on.

Memory Game

Place three to five different objects on a tray.

Let your toddler have a look at them while you talk about each of the items. Then cover the tray with a tea towel.

Now pick up one of the items, hiding it in the tea towel, and ask your child “what’s gone?”

Give them some clues to help them, maybe point out the shape of the item in the cloth, or if it makes a noise, give it a shake to try to remind them.

When they have either guessed correctly or given up, show them the object from under the cloth.

As your child gets better at this free toddler game, just keep adding more and more object, and give them less and less time to look over them. In this way this game can be played ot all ages. The Memory game is a great way of keeping your memory active.

I have also played this game with 10 year olds using 20 or so objects, it’s a great game that you can just keep on playing, whatever your age.

Free Toddler Games
Hot or Cold

This is a game I played and loved when I was small, it’s a bit like hide and seek, but you don’t hide, instead you hide an object like a teddy.

Explain to your toddler that you are going to hide teddy, that they will need to find him, and you will help them by saying hot or cold.

Hot if they are getting closer to teddy or Cold if they are moving away. Children love this game, and it’s such an easy game to play.

Free Toddler Games
What am I?

An easy game to play which is similar to the concept of Eye Spy, but on a toddler’s level.

Your toddler can choose to be anything at all, and you have to ask questions to guess what they are. Questions like what color they are, how big they are, their shape and what noise they make.

Be patient in this game, as your toddler will still be learning to understand how to play games with rules and it may take some time before they can play this game properly.

Toddler Fire Box
To begin with many children will choose to be their favourite item or toy, so to challenge them, you could make your own cards with different items on them, for them to pretend to be.

This is a great game for making you child think.
