Toddler Books
And Reading Children Stories

Early Reader Books
Toddler Books and children’s stories, is a great way for your child to learn the value of books.

When your reading, your child is taking in so much information, the movement of your lips, the sound that comes out of your mouth, the volume, the pitch, the rhythm of the words you say, as well as the pictures in the book, the colour, the movement and the feeling.

They learn how to hold a book, to turn pages from right to left, to look at the pictures to see what is going on in the story, and see the letters that make up the words to their favourite stories.

It also gives you a great bonding time, but choosing the right time to read a story to your child is important. There’s no point in you reading a story when your child is running around, watching a program, or trying to get away.

Choose a time after they have used up some of their energy, after being in the playground, after going for a walk, after singing and dancing around the room, or before going to bed.

By choosing the right time to read toddler books to them, you both will enjoy the experience.

Talking to your child is important, asking questions and pausing for their answer, even if their speech is delayed, pause for them to react to your question. Give them the opportunity to express themselves, if not through words, through their body language.

Very Hungry Caterpillar

With its lovely, humorous illustrations and wonderful narrative about a hungry caterpillar growing up to be a beautiful butterfly, Eric Carle's story touches anyone who still has some growing to do.

Along with reassuring repetition--"He was still hungry ..."--the book includes some wonderful interactive moments: what youngster can resist sticking a finger through that hole in the page as his ravenous friend makes his way through various delicacies?

Giraffes Can't Dance

With this rhyming, poignant (in a cartoonish way) tale, Giles Andreae, author of Rumble in the Jungle, and numerous other picture books, shows insecure young readers that everyone can be wonderful, even those that march to the beat of a different cricket.

The rhymes are somewhat awkward, but the bold, bright watercolors by Guy Parker-Rees will invite readers to kick up their heels and find their own internal harmony.

Rumble in the Jungle

A collection of poems about animals and a story about a journey through the jungle to hunt for them. The search begins as a small group of ants marches off from their hill early in the morning.

A verse then introduces each creature as encountered, until the end of the day when all of the animals are ready to sleep.

Goose on the Loose

A trio of titles debuts in Usborne's Easy Words to Read series by Phil Roxbee Cox, illustrated by Stephen Cartwright. In each, Cox weaves words with the same phonetic pattern into an engaging story. For instance, in Goose on the Loose, "Goose is on a scooter/ She can't stay and play/ She's a goose on the loose/ `Get out of my way!' "

Language consultant Marlynne Grant opens with an explanation about phonics.
